In May 2008, a few 'Hawkhursters' (invented term to describe the non-smuggling, modern day gang from a village in West Kent) decided to revive a dormant tradition.
If you are a man, and live/ work/ have kids at school/ drink beer in Hawkhurst, Kent, then the Hawkhurst Men's Breakfast offers an opportunity for you to get to know a few of your not-so-distant neighbours, or maybe to apologise to your closer neighbours for neglecting them so often ....
The format is a bi-monthly ritual of eating a decent breakfast, chatting with your fellow Hawkhursters, listening to a stimulating (local) guest speaker, and giving something to a charity of the speaker's choice (we have raised £1,380 from the first twelve breakfasts).
Speakers to date - all of whom are local - have included:
- Ben Legg, from Google, on the Internet and eCommerce
- Mark Goyder, of Tomorrow's Company, on the social role of the company
- Bob Benton, of Canaccord Adams, on media and investing
- Steve Fleming, journalist, on the murky world of national journalism
- Kevin Griffin, of Maison du Vin, on wine and all its benefits
- Bruce Cova, on local government, rotten meat and developing Hawkhurst
- Grahame Ludlow, on building Terminal 5, plus Formula 1 and MP sordid secrets
- Paddy Stewart-Blacker, on clearing mines in Afghanistan
- Maurice Cox, on the ins and outs of air traffic control since the beginning
- John Woods, of the UN's World Food Programme, on reducing hunger and disease
- Simon Bottle, on hedge funds and the (flawed) psychology of markets
- Phil Hunt, CTO of Mobikats, on mobile phone application development
Our next meeting will be on Saturday 11th September 2010. Josh Judd, designer of trendy hotels, as well as homes for the rich and famous, will be sharing ideas, designs and experiences. Please come along (
